Help Out with the Intermediates Tournament

Bill O'Brien has, for years, donated time to running the paddle league and local tournaments. Once each year, he reaches out to avid paddle players to join his effort. Here's a message from our own HPTA president about a tournament being held over the weekend of November 17-18:

"Guys, every year Hinsdale runs the Illinois Intermediates Tournament as a way to give something back to this sport we love so much. This year, Bill O'Brien will once again be taking the lead on this tournament, but he needs someone to volunteer to take and record the entries. The good part about this task is that you can do it and still play in the tournament because your job is over about 3 days before the tournament starts.

All you need to do is to receive the entry forms and checks in the mail and then record the data on an Excel spreadsheet that Bill will provide. That's about it. And you will be following in the footsteps of guys like Bernie Hancock, Mike Williams, Ed Dunphy, Ed Usher, Jay Pollitt, Ed Varin and several others who have done this over the years.

If you are willing to volunteer, or have any questions, don't hesitate to call Bill at 630-325-6827 or e-mail him at bill.obrien@att.net "

Sign up now
The Tournament
Once again we are honoring Hinsdale's godfather of paddle, Bill O'Brien, and also again are raising money for Common Hope, a charity that provides education to underprivileged children in Guatemala.

Dates: Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 24 or 25

Fees: $50 per player (All $50 goes to Common Hope and is deductible)

How to sign up: 1) email Doug Brown, dbrown1956@aol.com, right now to
reserve your spot (only 8 teams per draw). Please give me
player names, email addresses and what draw you are in.

2) Mail $100 per team to Doug Brown at 5312 Howard Street,
Western Springs, IL 60558. Checks payable to "Doug
Brown." (Teams not paid by November 19 risk losing their
spots!)

The Draws
Women's Open 8:00am, Saturday November 24
Men's C (combined Series of 20 or higher) 1:00pm, Saturday, November 24
Men's B (combined Series of 10 or higher) 8:00am, Sunday, November 25
Men's A (combined Series of 4 or higher) 1:00pm, Sunday November 2

Since there are only 8 teams per draw, each draw will be completed in 4 hours. Single elimination with backdraws mean that every team will get 3 matches.

What's Red Zone?
Red Zone paddle tennis adds a way to win points by placing a target in the middle of the back screens. A team that hits the target gets the point.

What's Common Hope?
Learn more about the great work done by this organization by talking to Mary or Gary Doten, Doug Brown or Jane Veldman, all of whom have been to Guatemala to see Common Hope in action. Or look at http://commonhope.org/sponsorship/index.htm to see how sponsoring a child can make a big difference in the child's future at very little cost.
